Arsenal 5/6 to win against Southampton in Tuesday night’s Premier League clash

Competition: Premier League
Market: Arsenal to win against Southampton
Odds: 5/6 @ Bet 365

Arsenal welcome Southampton to the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night in a must-win game to keep up the pressure on the likes of Leicester City and Manchester City in the Premier League title-race.

Victory could see them go level on points with leaders Leicester depending on how the Foxes fare against Liverpool, but defeat could be damaging. Already three points adrift of the Midlands outfit, Arsenal can’t afford to open up an even larger deficit.

Southampton won’t be an easy opponent, however, with the Saints having won three of their last four meetings against Arsenal in all competitions, coupled with a real upturn in form of late. The visitors have won three on the bounce in the league, but they have struggled on the road.

And with Arsenal boasting four home wins from their last five in the Premier League, a Southampton outfit coming off the back of four defeats from five away games could well come unstuck on Tuesday. As a result, Bet 365 are giving odds of 5/6 for the Gunners to earn victory over Southampton.

Leicester City 13/8 to win against Liverpool in Tuesday night’s Premier League clash
Competition: Premier League
Market: Leicester City to win against Liverpool

Leicester City and Liverpool meet at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night in the Premier League in a game City can’t afford to lose. The Foxes suffered defeat in the reverse fixture, but they’ll be desperate for revenge to stay at the summit.

Currently leading the way in the Premier League after 23 games, Leicester are now being considered as genuine contenders. Many predicted they would tail off when the fixture list threw out difficult months against stellar opponents, but they still remain at the top and three clear of the chasing pack.

Coming off the back three wins and three draws on home soil, Liverpool will be very wary of their opposition, especially considering they have dropped points in three of their previous four in the Premier League. Tuesday night’s game could see City extend their lead at the top or see Liverpool potentially finish in the top-five.

With the Reds having lost three of their last five away games, Leicester City are being backed by 888 Sport with odds of 13/8 to see past the Merseysiders at the King Power Stadium.

A statement on Valencia's official website read: "Valencia Club de Futbol and Real Madrid have reached an agreement for the signing on loan of Russian international Denis Cheryshev, through to June 30, 2016.

"Cheryshev will undergo a medical on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 9:30 a.m., alongside the club's official medical partner Divina Pastora Seguros at the Ciudad Deportiva de Paterna.

"After his first training session with his new teammates, he will be officially presented at the Media Centre alongside sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch."

Madrid have also confirmed the agreement with Valencia.

The midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Villarreal, has made little impact since returning to the Bernabeu in the summer other than his involvement in the club's expulsion from the Copa del Rey.

Premier League transfer spending hits £1 billion for 2015-16 season

Transfer spending by Premier League clubs this season has surpassed the £1 billion mark for the first time, according to Deloitte.

It may have been a quiet start to deadline day on Monday, but total spending in the whole of the 2015-16 campaign has already reached an eye-watering amount.

Deloitte estimates that £130 million has been spent so far in the January transfer window, which takes the total sum for the season beyond £1bn for the first time in history.

Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: "We've seen Premier League clubs again use the January window to invest significantly in playing talent. With a day left, the total gross spending this season has already reached £1bn for the first time."

Newcastle have been the biggest spenders of the January window so far, bringing in the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend and Henri Saivet for a combined total of almost £29m.

The Magpies are expected to make further additions to their squad before Monday's 11pm deadline, with West Brom striker Saido Berahino top of their wishlist.

Newcastle spent £46m last summer while Manchester City parted with over £150m to sign Kevin De Bruyne, Fabian Delph, Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Otamendi to help their title charge.

Manchester United also spent over £100m on six new signings and Liverpool invested almost £80m in new players, although most of that money came from the sale of Sterling to City.

Norwich, Bournemouth and Sunderland have all spent over £15m in the current window, which highlights their determination to stay in the Premier League in order to start reaping the rewards from the £5.136bn TV deal that kicks in from next season.

Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini told about Guardiola last week - sources

MANCHESTER -- Manuel Pellegrini was informed last week that Pep Guardiola was set to take over as Manchester City manager next season, sources have told ESPN FC.

Pellegrini revealed at the end of Monday's news conference that he has agreed to part ways with the club on June 30 and City confirmed that Bayern Munich coach Guardiola will take charge for the start of the 2016-17 season.

The former Barcelona boss was heavily linked with City after revealing in December that he would leave Bayern and move to the Premier League, and sources said that City chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak told Pellegrini last week of the club's decision to appoint Guardiola.

Sources also said there is no acrimony over the decision, with Pellegrini now free to look for other jobs for next season.

The City manager told his players of the situation on Monday morning ahead of revealing the news to the media at a news conference.

Pellegrini confirmed to reporters that he wanted to make the news public to end the speculation over his future, which is why he chose to make the announcement three months before the end of the season. He hopes his squad can now focus on the rest of the campaign with his side still competing for four trophies.

Guardiola was a target for the club when Roberto Mancini was sacked in May 2012 and the club spoke to him before the Chilean took charge.

The Spaniard worked together with City director of football Txiki Begiristain and chief executive Ferran Soriano, at Barcelona where Guardiola won two Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles. But he still opted to go to Germany in 2013 after taking a year-long sabbatical.

City have now agreed a deal to take Guardiola to the Etihad, and the club believe Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United had also been interested in him.

Sources said the Bayern boss was the only manager in the frame to replace Pellegrini, with Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho never considered.

Former Villarreal and Real Madrid boss Pellegrini, who turned 62 at the start of the season, has said previously that he would like to continue in management if he left City, preferably in the Premier League.

He has ruled out taking over as Chile boss, saying: "I hope to remain with competitive teams in Europe. I am not thinking about returning to Chile at least for the next three or four years."

Stoke in talks with Porto's Giannelli Imbula, Mark Hughes confirms

Mark Hughes has confirmed that Stoke are in talks to sign Porto's Giannelli Imbula, with sources telling ESPN FC that the Potters have agreed a club-record fee of £18 million with the Portuguese side.

Stoke manager Hughes has been chasing a new defensive midfielder for some time after seeing Steven N'Zonzi leave for Sevilla in the summer.

Hughes has been tracking Imbula, 23, and has been given the green light by the Stoke board to break their transfer record of £12 million to land the Frenchman.

Hughes revealed during a news conference that Imbula, who only joined Porto in the summer from Marseille, and Stoke have been holding discussions, while he is hopeful the deal will be wrapped up before the transfer window closes on Monday night.

MH on Giannelli Imbula: Talks have been progressing. Hopefully by the end of the day we'll be able to annouce something. #DeadlineDay #SCFC

- Stoke City FC (@stokecity) February 1, 2016

He said: "We are hopeful. It is fair to say it has progressed significantly this morning. Last night [Sunday] it was seemingly difficult. Hopefully at some point in the day we will be about to announce a big signing.

"He is a good young player, has power, has a good range of passing. He will come in and add to the quality we have got.

"It is not something we jumped into at the last minute. A lot of work has been done in the last month. It is never easy with these deals, but the hope is he is joining as we speak and we will get it concluded."

Stoke have also been linked with a move for West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino, while sources have told ESPN FC that Peter Odemwingie is on the verge of joining Ligue 1 side Marseille on loan.

Fernando Torres hopes for Atletico Madrid summer renewal

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres acknowledged that he is unlikely to see his contract renewed as the winter transfer window shuts, but was optimistic that he could use the remaining time with the club to turn his fortunes around.

Torres, 31, returned to Atletico on loan from AC Milan in January 2015 but the Spain international has made over half his La Liga and Champions League appearances this season as a substitute. He has been sidelined recently with an ankle injury.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea forward is out of contract in the summer and so far Atletico boss Diego Simeone has been evasive when asked about whether he would like the player to extend his stay in Madrid.

"[Coach Diego Simeone] said it was something personal and that it would remain between us," Torres said on Monday during a promotional event. "Today the window closes and there are no proposals but there is the summer still. I have never hidden my feelings, from here on in it is not up to me. My job is to score goals. No one should take attention away from what is important here, and that is the team."

Goals from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez fired Barcelona to a 2-1 win over nine-man Atletico Madrid to strike a huge blow in the Primera Division title race over the weekend. Atletico next face Eibar on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo said last week that he would like to keep Torres, and his bid got a boost this past Friday after FIFA temporarily lifted the transfer bans imposed in January on both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. Both clubs are now cleared to sign and register players in the summer transfer window while world football's governing body investigates the club appeals regarding the signing of youth players.

Torres said he is focused on the team's goals.

"At the moment we are all in union. We have to think about Saturday's match and not look any further than that," he said. "The message is that we work together because when we do that, things go our way. Nothing is more important than Atletico Madrid. This is not the time to reprimand anyone. I am 31 years old, I am not a child. I take things with the serenity that they need. Personal matters are totally secondary."

Torres would not be drawn on whether or not he has had differences with his Argentine coach.

"My relationship with him is always the same, it is professional and one of admiration," Torres said. "I am grateful for the chance to come back and play. I am working to play 90 minutes. [Simeone] is very important for this club, we have accomplished a lot thanks to him. In this next phase I have learned many things and I hope to keep learning. Life and life experiences make one stronger."

He said he is hoping to end his long wait for his 100th Atletico Madrid goal, which has been on hold due to injury.

"I have been with this club since I was 11 and I only want to score this one goal, the other 98 have been gifts."

Wenger confirms Rosicky has new injury, denies Wilshere setback

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Tomas Rosicky picked up a new injury in Arsenal's FA Cup win against Burnley on Saturday, his first appearance of the season.

Rosicky came on for about 20 minutes in the second half in his return from a serious knee injury that he suffered last June - only to pick up a thigh problem right away. Wenger said the injury was still being assessed, but would not give a timeline for the Czech Republic midfielder's latest recovery process.

"He'll have a scan today, and we'll know much more about it tonight, I think," Wenger said at his news conference ahead of Tuesday's Premier League game against Southampton.

The Arsenal manager also denied reports that Jack Wilshere had suffered a setback in training, as he continues his recovery from a broken leg.

Wilshere has not played all season, but Wenger said the midfielder is still on course for a comeback in March and should still be able to compete for a spot in England's squad for Euro 2016.

"He's looking good I must say," Wenger said. "Overall I had a short chat with Roy Hodgson about him [on Saturday] and reassured him that he is progressing well."

Wenger predicted a quiet transfer deadline day for Arsenal, but said a loan deal for Mathieu Debuchy could still happen.

"At the moment, it doesn't look like it. But it's still a possibility," he added.

The France right-back wants more playing time ahead of the Euros, and if a deal happens it's likely to be a loan to another Premier League club, while winger Serge Gnabry is likely to go out on loan to Championship club after being recalled from his unsuccessful spell at West Bromwich Albion.

Barcelona star Neymar 'affected' by ongoing legal troubles

Barcelona star Neymar says he has been affected by the legal issues that have followed him since his arrival at the Nou Camp.

Neymar, 23, is due in a Madrid court on Tuesday to give evidence in a case brought by Brazilian third-party investment fund DIS, who feel they were cut out of the controversial transfer which brought the player to Barca from Santos in summer 2013.

The players' parents are due to give evidence on Tuesday by video-conference, while Barcelona's current president Josep Maria Bartomeu and predecessor Sandro Rosell are expected at the Audencia Nacional court on Monday.

The case is just one of a number of ongoing legal investigations into the complex deal -- with tax authorities in both Spain and Brazil also looking at alleged irregularities in what took place.

Neymar told Globo TV that while his his father wanted him to just focus on playing his football, this was proving difficult.

"When the issue starts to affect your family, it affects you a bit," the Brazil captain said. "It worries you. However, I am a guy who God has given the power to be focused in what I like to do, which is play football.

"I focus just on doing what I have to do. My father just wants me to focus on playing and on the ball. When you see the person you love being attacked, suffering, people saying things which are not true... then it hurts you. Before speaking without knowledge, telling lies, you must present proof."

This week's court case has been taken by DIS as the Brazil-based investment fund is angry at how the 2013 transfer was structured. Prior to the move, they "owned" 40 percent of Neymar's rights when he was at Santos, so they feel they were due 40 percent of the full transfer fee paid.

However, the deal was done in such a way for the "official" fee to have been just €17 million, not the €83m in total eventually paid -- with most of the extra monies being described as various different payments to Neymar and his family, but not part of the actual transfer itself.

Back in 2013, DIS received just €6.8m [40 percent of €17m], however they feel they are due around €33m in total [40 percent of €83m].

Neymar Sr. said in the same Globo interview that he wanted the whole thing cleared up "as soon as possible" without detailing how exactly that might happen.

"We want to put an end to this situation," he said. "It is the time to say 'enough'. If they're looking for attention, they will get it. We want to put an end to this case and we will do that. We will clear up this issue for once and for all. I wanted the courts to resolve it, but we are tired of this already and want it all cleared up as quickly as possible."

Even if the DIS case is settled, there are still investigations over alleged tax evasion ongoing in Brazil and Spain, however Neymar Sr. said there was no evidence such wrongdoing had taken place.

"There is nothing against us," he said. "The judge has called us to know about Neymar's transfer. If we have made a mistake, there is no problem, but to accuse us of tax evasion I think the red lines have already been crossed."
