USA FACING BRUTAL ROAD, BUT CHANCE FOR REDEMPTION AT COPA AMERICA CENTENARIO

For the second straight international tournament, the U.S. national team received one of the toughest draws in the competition. Goal USA's Ives Galarcep takes a closer look.

NEW YORK -- When the Copa America Centenario draw ended, the sentiment among U.S. national team fans was one of concern. The Americans were given the toughest draw of all four top seeds in the tournament, but none of the Copa's weakest entrants found their way into Group A, leading to complaints about yet another 'Group of Death'.

You wouldn't have known it watching Jurgen Klinsmann emerge for post-draw interviews with a smile on his face as he asked awaiting journalists if they were excited. Whether he was simply showing a brave face or genuinely excited about the challenge that awaits this summer, Klinsmann sounded like a coach who may have actually liked seeing his team be dealt a tough schedule.

"Obviously it's a difficult group, no doubt about it, but it's doable," Klinsmann said after the draw. "We had a similar kind of scenario in Brazil and we went through, so now we start with Colombia right away instead of Ghana.

"Colombia is one of the top teams in South America, no doubt about it. Paraguay is a strong team. Costa Rica we know," he added. "We start right on our toes with the opening whistle in Santa Clara. It's exciting."

Perhaps Klinsmann sees this summer as the perfect opportunity to regain the good will he lost after the U.S. stumbled through a forgettable showing at the 2015 Gold Cup. In terms of fan approval rating, Klinsmann's is probably as low as it has ever been, and a strong showing in the Copa's toughest group would bring him back to the levels he enjoyed after the 2014 World Cup,
The American draw started out with Paraguay, arguably the toughest team in Pot 4, but the real drama always lied in Pots 2 and 3. Costa Rica was the worst-case scenario of the teams in Pot 3, so when the Ticos emerged from the bowl, a Group of Death billing was all but ensured given the powerhouses awaiting in the final pot.

The gasps were audible in the Hammerstein Ballroom when Colombia was drawn, no doubt a combination of reactions from worried U.S. fans, as well as Colombia fans, who were well-represented at the draw. The reaction was a somewhat surprising one because the reality is Uruguay or Chile would have been tougher draws, or at least more likely to be tougher opponents.

The issue with Colombia is that the Cafeteros are a stacked team from a talent standpoint, but one that has struggled to find the impressive rhythm and unity it showed at the 2014 World Cup. U.S. fans surely remembered how good Colombia looked in 2014, but the reality is Jose Pekerman's side has been inconsistent since then. Colombia managed just one goal in four matches at the 2015 Copa America, and posted mixed results in the early CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers last fall.

All that said, Colombia is still a team that boasts dangerous attacking firepower, from James Rodriguez to Carlos Bacca to Juan Cuadrado and Jackson Martinez. If Pekerman can help Colombia regain its 2014 swagger, then the Americans will be hard-pressed to stop the Cafeteros.

The biggest obstacle in the U.S. group isn't Colombia, but rather Costa Rica. The Ticos turned heads with a strong showing at the 2014 World Cup, then watched a horrendous penalty call rob them in a Gold Cup quarterfinal loss to Mexico. Costa Rica isn't the same team it was in 2014, when Jorge Luis Pinto had the Ticos playing stingy defense and counterattacking teams to death. Since that World Cup success, Costa Rica has seen many of its players move to top European leagues, with the likes of Keylor Navas and Joel Campbell enjoy career-best success.

As important as the strengthening player pool for Costa Rica is the confidence the Ticos will have heading into the Copa America after their success in Brazil in 2014. Nobody expected Costa Rica to do much in a brutal group that included Uruguay, Italy and England. Not only did the Ticos survive, they won their group, sparking a run all the way to the World Cup quarterfinals.

"That makes me calm. Now we can't be scared after what we did at the World Cup," Costa Rica head coach Oscar Ramirez said. "The players have that experience now. This is a different tournament, but players won't be scared now about being in a group of death."

Klinsmann expressed a similar sentiment about the U.S. showing at the 2014 World Cup. The reactions to the U.S. World Cup draw two years ago were even more negative than Sunday's draw reactions. That World Cup draw was seen as a worst-case scenario, complete with a brutal first match against familiar foe Ghana. That brutal draw produced an opportunity for the Americans to step up and exceed expectations. The U.S. did just that, surviving the 'Group of Death'.

"Would you like an easier group? Maybe on the paper, but then no group is easy," Klinsmann said. "We'll take it the way it is. We'll have done the same with Brazil and we'll do it now too. And then we'll go out there and give it a go."

Sunday's Copa draw wasn't as tough as the 2014 World Cup draw, but the current U.S. team isn't in as good a place as the 2014 U.S. team was in. That team came off a strong showing in World Cup qualifying and won all three pre-World Cup friendlies. There was a sense of momentum and possibility.

The current U.S. team is much more a work in progress, still trying to figure out its identity, which is probably the main reason why there's so much angst about the U.S. group. It isn't a stretch to say that if the U.S. doesn't sort out its defense, and figure out its midfield, we could see an 0-3 finish at the Copa America, which would be disastrous.

It will be up to Klinsmann and the U.S. team to get its act together in the coming months and turn Sunday's Copa draw into a Group of Opportunity rather than Group of Death.

ARGENTINA & CHILE SET FOR FINAL REMATCH IN 2016 COPA AMERICA

The side coached by Jorge Sampaoli prevailed on penalties when the nations clashed in the 2015 decider, but Gerardo Martino's men will be keen for revenge in the US

Argentina and Chile will lock horns once again in the Copa America, after being drawn together in Group D of the competition's centenary edition.

The draw took place in New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, in front of top Concacaf and Conmebol executive as well as several participating coaches.

And the two 2015 finalists were drawn alongside each other in the final group, alongside Bolivia and Panama. Argentina and Chile will kick off their group in Santa Clara, California, on June 6.

The last competitive fixture between the neighbouring nations finished a 0-0 draw, but Gonzalo Higuain's missed penalty helped the team then coached by Jorge Sampaoli to prevail in the shootout.

Hosts United States, meanwhile, face a daunting trip to the quarter-finals after being drawn in the 'Group of Death'.

2015 semi-finalists Paraguay, Jose Pekerman's Colombia and Costa Rica await the USMNT, while Brazil will be pleased with having drawn Peru, Haiti and Ecuador in Group C.

SIMEONE: ATLETICO STILL ON TRACK DESPITE VILLARREAL DRAW

The Argentine was pleased with his side's point, despite falling further behind Barcelona, and says the team are on course to meet the targets they set at the start of the season

Diego Simeone refused to view
Atletico Madrid's goalless La Liga draw against Villarreal in a negative light.

Like city rivals Real Madrid earlier on Sunday at Malaga, Atleti were forced to settle for a share of the spoils and are now eight points behind defending champions Barcelona at the summit with 13 games remaining.

However, speaking at a post-match news conference, Simeone was reluctant to discuss the title prospects of his 2013-14 champions – preferring to focus on maintaining a six-point advantage over their miserly opponents Villarreal, who lie fourth.

The top-three teams in La Liga earn automatic Champions League qualification, while the side in fourth must undergo a preliminary round in Europe's premier club competition.

"If we focus on our objectives, we are on track and it will be very difficult until the end of the season," said Simeone, who will lead Atleti back into Champions League action against PSV on Wednesday before next weekend's Madrid derby.

"Obviously we would have liked to win but the result keeps Villarreal six points behind us. Based on the squad's objectives we set at the start of the season, we are well set to achieve them.

"Except for Barcelona, who are different to all the rest, it is difficult for all of us. There is Real Madrid, Sevilla, Athletic [Bilbao]. We all have our needs and it becomes more difficult to achieve your objectives.

"It is clear that we went for the three points but Villarreal have one of the best defences in La Liga and counter-attack well."

Villarreal striker Cedric Bakambu missed a glorious chance after the hour on one of the breakaway moments Simeone identified as a danger.

"In the second half they had their counter-attacks, they came here to try and win the game," he added.
"We kept the gap with them and that is something positive."

SPALLETTI: TOTTI SITUATION IS IN THE PAST HE WILL TRAIN WITH ROMA TOMORROW

The coach left the club captain out of his squad for Sunday's Serie A game but has sought to draw a line under the incident and expects the player to return to the group

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti expects club icon Francesco Totti to return to training on Monday after leaving him out of the matchday squad for Sunday's 5-0 thrashing of Palermo.

In an interview with TG1 on Saturday, the 39-year-old forward said he wanted "more respect" than to be restricted to a substitutes' role as his illustrious Roma career winds down.

The former Italy international has more than 700 appearances in a career-long association with the club but, with his contract set to expire in June, he suggested his rapport with Spalletti was minimal.

Spalletti, who replaced Rudi Garcia to begin a second spell in charge at the Stadio Olimpico last month, responded by dropping Totti and the player subsequently received a rousing reception from home supporters when he took his seat for the match in the stands.

"The Totti situation is in the past," Spalletti told reporters after watching Edin Dzeko and Mohamed Salah hit braces. "He was at the stadium and in the changing room. He'll train with us tomorrow.

"It was just a moment of anger and discomfort and that can happen in certain circumstances. If [Roma's] greatest post-war player makes these comments, it turns into a big deal.

"There are rules in place for managing the group and I had to deal with Totti's reaction.

"Based on what emerged from his comments, and the fact that all over the media there was only talk about this, I thought there was the danger of it affecting concentration after a Champions League game [Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Real Madrid].

"I had asked him nicely, like a father, to help the transition from one fixture to another. There are roles. It might be abnormal, but this is how things are done here.

"If you treat one player in a certain way, you have to treat everyone equally, even if that player is Francesco Totti. I could not do otherwise.

"It's true he is a great champion and I must have respect for him, but I must also have respect for all the players in the squad."

RUMOURS: CHELSEA LEAD CHASE FOR £40M SANE

Roman Abramovich is being urged to spend big to land the talented Germany international but will face competition from Pep Guardiola who is also a big fan of the midfielder

Chelsea are leading the race to sign Leroy Sane from Schalke and hope to beat Manchester United and City to his signature in a £40 million deal, according to The Sun.

The Bundesliga side are expected to sell the 20-year-old this summer with the Blues willing to spend big to land the youngster.

Pep Guardiola is an admirer of Sane while United were also interested although have been put off by the transfer fee.

GARY NEVILLE DETERMINED TO MAINTAIN VALENCIA RESURGENCE

The 41-year-old says the confidence his returned to his team after extending their winning run but insists he is not getting carried away by their recent form

Gary Neville insists the mood has changed within the Valencia dressing room following a third consecutive win in all competitions.

Goals from Dani Parejo and Santi Mina saw Valencia claim a 2-1 away win at Granada in La Liga on Sunday - adding to Thursday's 6-0 triumph over Rapid Vienna in the Europa League and last Saturday's 2-1 league victory at home to Espanyol.
U
The latest win saw Valencia secure back-to-back victories in La Liga for the first time since November, easing the pressure on Neville.

And after seeing his team win three games on the bounce, the former Manchester United player believes confidence is starting to return at Mestalla.

"It's a very important victory. You have to make the most of the good moments when they arrive, and the mood of the dressing room has changed," he told reporters.

"We have to continue taking the victories; you can't get carried away, we must continue working in order to keep winning.

"I am not liberated by this win - I'm happy. We could have finished the first half 2-0 up, as we had two good chances.

"In the second half Granada were obviously going to press us a lot. We saw that this team never stopped believing."

Neville also confirmed Tunisian defender Aymen Abdennour is not far away from returning after suffering a hamstring strain in the side's win over Espanyol last Saturday.

"We now have a full squad available and Abdennour will be back very soon," he said.

"We have to keep changing the team because we have a very strong squad."

Valencia travel to Austria for the second leg of their round-of-32 tie against Rapid on Thursday before a home clash against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Sunday.

RUMOURS: MAN UTD TO PRESS ON WITH AUBAMEYANG CHASE

The Red Devils are in a state of managerial turmoil at the moment, but the club's hierarchy are keen to keep the momentum going regarding summer recruitment

Manchester United's plans to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not be hampered by the club's messy managerial situation, according to a report in the Independent .

With Louis van Gaal's job hanging in the balance and rumours of a Jose Mourinho takeover doing the rounds, the club are keen to avoid the noise and continue planning for their squad's future.

Arsenal are also said to have Aubameyang high up on their wishlist, but steps are being taken by United to move to the top of the pile, with chief scout Jim Lawlor given full responsibility to push on with negotiations for summer signings.

KOKE: ATLETICO WILL FIGHT TO THE END IN LA LIGA

The midfielder is refusing to concede the title to Barcelona despite his side having dropped eight points behind Luis Enrique's table-toppers with 13 games to go

Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke refused to concede his team's La Liga title chances after a goalless draw with Villarreal saw them lose ground on leaders Barcelona.

Luis Enrique's defending champions were the only team in the top five to win this weekend, battling to a 2-1 triumph at Las Palmas on Saturday, that puts them eight points clear with 13 matches remaining.

Second-placed Atleti and Villarreal cancelled each other out as a display of their formidable defensive capabilities resulted in a stalemate at the Vicente Calderon.

Diego Simeone's men remain a point above city rivals Real Madrid, who entertain their near neighbours next weekend having drawn 1-1 at Malaga.

Atletico turn towards Champions League action at PSV before that eagerly awaited encounter and Spain international Koke is not looking too far ahead.

Asked by Movistar Plus whether the Liga title race was finished, he said: "We just go game by game, as always.

"It is the Champions League next, then the Bernabeu [to face Real Madrid].

"We're second and we will keep fighting until the end to stay near the top.

"We played with intensity but lacked luck and effectiveness in attack, where we should be more aggressive.

"Villarreal are well organised and they made their game. They played well."

Star forward Antoine Griezmann passed up arguably Atletico's best chance when he failed to make a clean connection with Juanfran's cross before half-time.

The France international was substituted shortly after the hour as he extended his goalless run to five matches, although Koke backed his colleague to turn this slump around.

"He is a great player and he will soon rediscover [his form]," Koke said.

WENGER: MESSI, SUAREZ & NEYMAR'S CAMARADERIE IS INCREDIBLE

The Gunners manager is all too aware of the danger posed by Barcelona's triple threat, but intends to find a way for his side to keep the Blaugrana blunted in the Champions League

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on Barcelona's attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, but insists he will try to find a way to stop the free-scoring trio.

The Gunners face the Blaugrana in the Champions League on Tuesday having won only one of their seven encounters with the Spanish side, and the French manager admits Barca's prolific trident are a joy to behold.

“It’s incredible camaraderie," Wenger told the press. "I believe that apart from the individual talent the three have, they have a good understand and cohesion. They have a great solidarity.

“I have seen that Cristiano Ronaldo said that Messi passed the ball to Suarez at a penalty last week because he wanted him to be the top goal-scorer.

“When you see someone like Messi, who could score his 300th goal, give the ball to Suarez when he had the opportunity to score goal 300 that means there’s really something in there."

Having swapped Camp Nou for the Emirates, Alexis Sanchez's departure made room for Luis Suarez at the head of Barca's attack in 2014. And while Sanchez has been key for Arsenal since his arrival, Wenger feels Suarez brings more than just goals to a team.

"Suarez is the kind of guy who manages to create that spirit in teams," he added. "He did it at Liverpool, he did it playing with Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan for Uruguay and did it well.

“It looks like it is fun for them [MSN] to play together. But honestly, it is fun to play football, don’t forget that. They don’t look like they're playing under any pressure because they know at the moment it’s easy for them.”

Wenger famously tried to sign the Uruguayan back in 2013, only for Suarez to make the move to Camp Nou a year later. When asked if he has any regrets about missing out on the striker, the Arsenal boss pointed to time as the great healer.

“Not now. It happened to me before but not now,” he went on. “He’s a player there and we have to keep him quiet on Tuesday night.

“We have to analyse what we do and do it well and together. Individually all their players are difficult to stop. We have to find a way to do it collectively.”

COACH UNUANEL REFUSES TO BLAME EZENWA FOR SUNSHINE STARS DRAW

The Owena Waves handler admitted pointing the finger at his goalkeeper would be too easy, insisting that it does not matter whose fault the ‘equaliser’ was

Sunshine Stars handler Samson Unuanel is refusing to blame goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa for his role in the Owena Waves 1-1 draw at the Akure Township Stadium on Sunday.’

Friday Ubong capitalised on the Super Eagles player’s howler to cancel out Okiki Afolabi’s opener as the Promise Keepers got a valuable away point in the Nigeria Professional Football Week One opener.

Speaking to Goal after the game, Unuanel said: “I’m very disappointed but that is just the game, though we lost the game ourselves because we lost a lot of scoring chances.

“Throughout the second half, we were in their half but failed to bring down our visitors. Anyway, that is gone and we will correct our mistakes and that time is now.”

“I won’t finger Ezenwa for that goal, I take the blame for that because I fielded him and he is the best we have, he continued.

“Anyone can make mistakes, so he shouldn’t be condemned for that. Mind you, eleven players played and he made crucial saves during the game.

“This is not the time to trade blames on anyone, the game has been played and we will must on from there.

“When I get to the dressing room, I will tell my players to take their chances when it comes, be up and doing, always give a 100% concentration and that is just it,” he concluded.

Sunshine Stars travel to the Aper Aku Stadium for their Week Two encounter against Lobi Stars on Wednesday.

KOULIBALY ALLEGIANCE A SURPRISE TO DESCHAMPS

The 47-year-old has been tracking the Napoli centre-back for France's Euro 2016 squad having been unaware the defender has already played international football for Senegal

France coach Didier Deschamps has mistakenly been keeping taps on Senegal international Kalidou Koulibaly for the host nation's Euro 2016 squad.

Deschamps was quizzed on the chances of Aymeric Laporte being called up for the tournament considering his good form for Athletic Bilbao in 2015-16.

The 1998 World Cup-winner said the young Basque faces competition from the likes of Barcelona's Jeremy Mathieu and Napoli's Koulibaly.

"For our defence, I've also been following Kouilibaly," he told French TV programme Canal Football Club.

The only problem is, despite being born in France, Koulibaly has played several times for Senegal since making his international debut for the African nation in 2015.

When told of this revelation, a surprised Deschamps responded: "Really?>

Lionel Messi starting to surpass levels of Pele, Maradona other greats - Zico

Zico claims Lionel Messi is on the brink of becoming the greatest footballer of all-time as Arsenal prepare to face the Barcelona superstar.

Messi and Co head to the Emirates Stadium to tackle the Gunners in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday, with his forward colleagues Luis Suarez and Neymar also sure to be a major threat in London.

But former Brazil playmaker Zico considers Messi as accomplished a player as there has ever been.

"He is starting to surpass the level of Pele, Garrincha, [Johan] Cruyff, [Franz] Beckenbauer and [Diego] Maradona," Zico told Barca TV.

Argentinian Messi recently became the first player to reach 300 league goals in Spain, and at the age of 28 he could have many years left in the game.

He has delivered against Arsenal in the past, most memorably when scoring four at the Nou Camp against Arsene Wenger's side in 2010.

With Suarez and Neymar now providing a further threat, Zico fears the worst for Arsenal over two legs.

"The trident is fantastic because they play as a team and suit each other perfectly," Zico said, according to Barcelona's website.

"Barca are favourites both in London and at Camp Nou."

Despite his admiration for Messi, Zico suggested next year could see a Barcelona teammate land the FIFA Ballon d'Or award.

He said: "It would not be surprising at all if Neymar was named the best player in the world."

Didier Drogba defends Serge Aurier after Periscope outburst

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has leapt to the defence of fellow Ivory Coast teammate Serge Aurier who was suspended by Paris Saint-Germain for making derogatory remarks on social media.

Both players teamed up to help Ivory Coast win the African Cup of Nations last year and Aurier has been steadily rising as one of the top full-backs in world football since.

The rise, however, came to a staggering halt when Aurier was banned from the PSG squad prior to the 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg tie on Tuesday.

His suspension was for a video he posted on social media, where he made derogatory remarks about head coach Laurent Blanc and PSG's star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

While it is unclear what the future holds for the 23-year-old defender, his countryman Drogba, wants the player to be educated and given a chance to learn from his mistake.

The Chelsea legend posted a long comment on Twitter, where he has rallied for the football fraternity to forgive Aurier and let him grow and mature as a player.

#justiceadeuxvitesses @Serge_aurier pic.twitter.com/14s24n9ptQ

Blanc, who labelled Aurier as "pitiful" for his comments did not confirm if the player will continue his career at PSG, and has left it to the club authorities to handle the matter.

Louis Van Gaal: I'd prefer Man United to win FA Cup over Europa League

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal would prefer to win the FA Cup than the Europa League but accepts that European success is the club's best route into the Champions League.

Van Gaal returned United to the Champions League by finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, but they are currently fifth, six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.

After dropping into the Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League group, they take on FC Midtjylland on Thursday in the first leg of their round-of-32 clash.

Victory in the competition would see United qualify for next season's Champions League, but Van Gaal -- who is hoping to guide the club to their first major trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013 -- said his personal preference would be to lead them to a first FA Cup since 2004.

"My personal wish is to win the FA Cup. I have already won the UEFA Cup and I want to win a title in England," said Van Gaal, who won both the UEFA Cup and Champions League with Ajax in the 1990s.

"That is why I have come to this country, to make Manchester United champions or give them a title [in England], but I understand -- for Manchester United it is much more important to win the Europa League because it will give us the Champions League.

"It is not only my best route, but ours I think."

However, there are several elite clubs in contention for the Europa League this season, including reigning champions Sevilla, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, Porto, Villarreal, Bayer Leverkusen and Premier League rivals Tottenham and Liverpool.

Van Gaal added: "I think it is also difficult to win [the Europa League] because there are also very good European teams in the League. We are with the last 32 teams, so we still need to win a lot of rounds.

"It's a way to get into the Champions League. It's a fantastic aim for us to win this cup because Manchester United have never won it."

Van Gaal warned that Danish champions Midtjylland will also provide a stern test of his team's credentials.

"We have to beat Midtjylland, who are a very good team," he said. "They play in a difficult shape for us. Sunderland showed it [in United's 2-1 defeat on Saturday] and Midtjylland play in the same shape, 4-1-4-1.

"They are specialised at set plays -- they have scored 48 percent of their goals from them -- so we'll try to organise for that but it's difficult. We hope we can do that but we mustn't give too many corners or free kicks away.

"We don't have tall players but we know that in advance. I cannot select other players now because of their height. We have a squad of 26 players and 13 are left, then the rest are out of the second team. I always have to select players on quality, not height, but it is a problem.

"The circumstances are also not so easy. I have seen that the pitch is smaller than usual so it is not so easy to beat Midtjylland here and a lot of teams have experienced that."

United will be without captain Wayne Rooney, who is reportedly facing around two months out with a knee injury, but Van Gaal said he does not regret allowing Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez to leave the club in the summer.

"Our policy is that we didn't want a big squad, because otherwise you can't try youngsters in your team, and normally you don't have so many injuries," he said.

Will Keane, recently returned from a loan spell at Preston, is expected to be given a bigger role in Rooney's absence.

PSG's Zlatan Ibrahimovic: I'm 'in good shape' for Premier League

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has not ruled out a move to the Premier League in the summer when his Paris Saint-Germain contract expires.

Ibrahimovic, 34, has won league titles in the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and France during a sparkling career, but could finally move to England when his deal expires in the summer.

The Sweden international, quoted in several national newspapers, said: "I have another three months here and then... what will happen? Big things will happen."

Asked specifically about a move to the Premier League, Ibrahimovic added: "Let's just say I am in good shape."

Ibrahimovic's career has taken him from Malmo to Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan and PSG.

Unless he were willing to take a significant pay cut, only a handful of clubs could afford to match his reported £200,000-a-week-after-tax wages, and Manchester City can almost certainly be ruled out after Ibrahimovic was critical of Pep Guardiola -- his coach at Barcelona -- in his autobiography.

Ibrahimovic played for Jose Mourinho, strongly linked with the Manchester United job should Louis van Gaal leave, at Inter.

Marcelo returns to Real Madrid's starting XI against Roma

Left-back Marcelo returned to the Real Madrid starting XI for their UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg tie against Roma on Wednesday.

Marcelo was expected to be out for a couple of weeks after suffering a painful shoulder injury in Madrid's 2-1 win at Granada on Feb. 7, but the Brazil international was named in coach Zinedine Zidane's lineup to face Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

Gareth Bale, who has been out of action since picking up a calf injury against Sporting Gijon on Jan. 17, remained unavailable for Zidane's side.

In all, two changes were made to the Real XI that defeated Athletic Bilbao 4-2 in La Liga play at the weekend.
Here's the complete lineup for Wednesday's match: Navas, Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo, Kroos, Modric, Isco, James, Benzema, Ronaldo.

Roma, for their part, will begin the match with Szczesny, Florenzi, Manolas, Rüdiger, Digne, Pjanic, Vainqueur; Salah, Nainggolan, El Shaarawy, Perotti.

Man United's Wayne Rooney could miss two months with injury - report

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney could miss two months of the season with a knee ligament injury, according to The Times.

Rooney was already set to miss United's match against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League on Thursday, having not been named in the 18-man travelling squad for the first leg of the round-of-32 tie.

The club did not explain the forward's absence and manager Louis van Gaal confirmed he had a knee injury, but would not say how long Rooney would be out.

More on Rooney from the boss: "You can never say [how long he could be out for]. He has a knee problem so we must wait and see." #MUTV #mufc

- Manchester United (@ManUtd) February 17, 2016

"It's difficult to say but he was injured in the game versus Sunderland and has a knee problem," Van Gaal explained. "We have to wait and see how long that takes. I cannot say.

"Certainly in 2016, he has scored and that's why we had a good run in matches until Sunderland. But we have to cope with that. Everybody can be injured and also the captain can be injured.

"He's a guy who wants to go until the end and, if he is feeling pain, he doesn't want to go away, and certainly when you are drawing a match, because he wants to win. That's a fantastic attitude but also it's bad for his body. You do not know when it happened, so that's the difficulty."

The 30-year-old had rediscovered his form recently after a disappointing start to the campaign, scoring seven times in nine appearances since the start of the calendar year.

A prolonged absence for Rooney would test Manchester United's attacking resources, which have been questioned this season. Responsibility will fall on the shoulders of Anthony Martial, while Will Keane was named in the squad for the visit to Denmark.

The news is also a blow to England ahead of the European Championship in the summer. They have friendlies against Netherlands and Germany in March, which their captain is now expected to miss.

With at least 12 senior players not available for the Midtjylland match, Van Gaal has called up several young, inexperienced players such as Donald Love, Regan Poole, Joe Riley, James Weir and Keane.

And he said: ``When you analyse the injuries it's ridiculous. They are all contact injuries and it is a lot of bad luck. Maybe once or twice you have to back up the team with youngsters, but this year we have had to do it every week. But we have seen that it's also beneficial for Manchester United.''

Lionel Messi brace sees Barcelona beat Sporting Gijon and go six clear

Lionel Messi passed 300 Primera Division goals as Barcelona extended their lead at the top to six points with a 3-1 victory over Sporting Gijon.

It took Messi just 25 minutes to reach the landmark, and six minutes later he made it 301, with Luis Suarez putting a missed penalty behind him to add the third in the 67th minute.

Gijon had briefly levelled matters through Carlos Castro and gave a good account of themselves, with goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar producing several good saves, including from Suarez's spot-kick.

Barca boss Luis Enrique grew up as a Sporting fan and said before the match that if their record 30-match unbeaten run was to end, he would want it to do so at El Molinon.

But that never looked likely to happen, and Cuellar produced his first fine save in the 21st minute to deny Suarez after he had been played through by Neymar.

Four minutes later Cuellar was beaten as Messi dropped his shoulder and cut in from the right before finding the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Sporting had looked dangerous on the break and it took them only two minutes to draw level, Alex Menendez playing a precision ball across the box for Castro to slide in and convert.

But four minutes later Messi struck again, finishing high into the net after an intelligent cutback from Suarez.

It was nearly three almost immediately but Cuellar denied Messi a hat trick and then earned some luck as Neymar's curled follow-up hit the far post.

Cuellar blotted his copybook by bringing down Suarez in the 61st minute to concede a penalty but made amends with a fine save.

After their headline-grabbing penalty at the weekend, when Messi passed for Suarez to score, Barca took the conventional route this time only to be denied.

Suarez did not have to wait long for a goal, though, and this time it was all his own work as he curled home a sublime finish in the 67th minute.

Cuellar prevented a fourth with another save from Neymar but the visitors had done more than enough to move six points ahead of Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp wary of motivated Augsburg in Europa League

Jurgen Klopp has said Liverpool will be braced for Augsburg to raise themselves for the "biggest game in their history" when the clubs meet in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Bundesliga club are competing in European competition for the first time, and Klopp expects them to forget their struggles in the German league when they host the Reds in the round-of-32 first leg.

"It won't be too easy," Klopp told his prematch news conference on Wednesday. "Bundesliga clubs are never easy to play against and especially a club like Augsburg, who are a special story in Germany.

The boss in great spirits this evening! #LFC pic.twitter.com/LGmCu9wGa8

- Liverpool FC (@LFC) February 17, 2016

"They have said it is the biggest game in their history. If it is the biggest game in their history you can imagine how ready they are for this game."

The domestic relegation battle facing the home side would not detract from their focus on progressing to the last 16, Klopp said.

"You could say the Europa League is not the best competition for them at this moment when they are fighting in the Bundesliga, but they are really confident and want to go to the next round," he said.

"For a club like Augsburg the competition is the biggest money they can get in Europe because the Champions League is far away.

"These clubs want to go for the Europa League and no one would ever ask them a question like 'don't you think it's better to go out of European football and concentrate on the league?'

"Maybe in this case when you have 21 points and are in a difficult situation you could say 'yes' but from outside you will not see this at the game. They will fight for their lives, for sure, because for them it is an absolute highlight."

Klopp denied that the interest surrounding his first match in his homeland since being appointed Liverpool manager in October was a factor in Thursday's tie.

He admitted, though, that his years in charge of German clubs Borussia Dortmund and Mainz could give Liverpool an advantage -- and he identified Augsburg striker Raul Bobadilla as a man to watch.

"I don't think there is extra motivation because I am there," Klopp said. "I have never had a problem with their players or something like this.

"I've played a lot of times against them and that makes the preparation easier but in the end they will fight for everything.

"They have a good mixture of experience and young players and made some really good transfers.

"They have players with big potential and have one of the most physical strikers in Europe in Raul Bobadilla, who you need a navigation system to drive around! He is a real worker and difficult to defend.

"Their manager said it would be better for them if Liverpool had another manager because they would never have been to Augsburg. We know everything about this team."

Barcelona's Lionel Messi scores 300th La Liga goal against Sporting Gijon

Lionel Messi scored his 300th La Liga goal for Barcelona against Sporting Gijon on Wednesday night.

Messi, 28, netted his first La Liga goal almost 11 years ago and has gone on to hit 299 more in 335 appearances.

Messi cut onto his left foot just outside the box and curled a shot into the bottom corner through a forest of defenders' legs in the 25th minute.

Although Gijon levelled almost immediately, Messi scored his 301st goal in the 31st minute to put Barca back in front.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner turned down the chance to reach his 300 milestone in the 6-1 win over Celta Vigo from the penalty spot when he passed to Luis Suarez to score instead.

Barcelona have not lost in a club-record 30 matches and have a three-point lead at the top of the Spanish table, with a game in hand over second-place Atletico Madrid.

HIDDINK: AWAY GOALS GIVES CHELSEA HOPE AGAINST PSG

The Blues coach admits Edinson Cavani's late winner for the hosts hurt his side but s confident his side can turn the result around when they meet at Stamford Bridge

Guus Hiddink was keen to focus on the positives of Chelsea's performance despite their 2-1 loss at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday.

John Obi Mikel was the unlikely scoring hero for the Premier League side, cancelling out Zlatan Ibrahimovic's deflected free-kick in first-half stoppage time.

Edinson Cavani slotted a cute finish past Thibaut Courtois at the near post to give the runaway Ligue 1 leaders victory on the night but veteran boss Hiddink feels the last-16 tie remains firmly in the balance.

"Yes, of course the result is negative but on the other hand it is always important to have an away goal," he told BT Sport.

"It hurt a bit at the end but the team is still in the race.

"On four or five counters, with the last pass we were not lethal enough but we can be happy with the performance.

"At the end, if we can do it at Stamford Bridge then a defeat in Paris doesn't count so much."

Mikel has re-established himself as a first-team starter under Hiddink, having also enjoyed his time during the Dutchman's previous tenure at Stamford Bridge in 2009.

"He's had a kind of little revival and it is good for him and the team," Hiddink said.

"The rest of the team is working very hard, very disciplined."

Hiddink insisted he was not concerned to be tackling one of Europe's in-form sides without injured central-defensive duo John Terry and Kurt Zouma, something he felt was vindicated by fine showings from Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic at the heart of defence.

"We didn't worry a lot about the absence of some payers in central defence," he added.

"The rest have to do it, they had confidence and they did what has been asked."

DAVID LUIZ: PSG COULD HAVE SCORED MORE AGAINST CHELSEA

The Brazil international was delighted to beat his former side while match-winner Edinson Cavani underlined his team's desire to lift the European Cup this season

Paris Saint-Germain defender David Luiz believes his team could have scored more after claiming a 2-1 win over Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.

Edinson Cavani dispatched a second-half winner at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday after visiting midfielder John Obi Mikel cancelled out Zlatan Ibrahimovic's deflected free-kick on the stroke of half-time.

Chelsea and PSG have tangled in each of the last two seasons in Europe's premier competition, with either side earning a victory apiece on away goals.

Ex-Chelsea centre-back David Luiz is yet to finish on the losing side having moved to the French champions in 2014, but believes they have taken a good step towards a quarter-final berth.

"[It is] only a narrow win, but a win against a good team. I think we gave it our all tonight and got the win we wanted," he told beIN Sport.

"Sure, it could have been better. We made many opportunities. We have good feelings. It's already a good step to take the first leg."

Cavani's 78th-minute strike was just his second in the Champions League this season, and he was pleased to find the back of the net once again as he looks to help the club to glory in the competition.

"It's a fantastic night. We won, which is the most important thing. We really want to win this competition," the Uruguayan said.

"I am very happy. I think we forwards, we live thanks to goals. They give us the strength to keep working. So yes, this is important for the group and for me.

"This period has been difficult and I am trying to change things."

PERFECT BENFICA WILL GET JOB DONE IN RUSSIA - VITORIA

The hosts left it until the dying minutes of the first-leg of their Champions League clash with Zenit and the coach is confident they will put on a good show in the return leg

Benfica coach Rui Vitoria was brimming with confidence after his team snatched a 1-0 Champions League win over Zenit at Estadio da Luz.

Vitoria's men looked set for another frustrating evening in front of their home supporters in the first leg of the last-16 tie, following Friday's 2-1 defeat against bitter rivals Porto.

The game looked set to fade out to a goalless draw, but Zenit full-back Domenico Criscito was sent off for a second-bookable offence and, from the resulting free-kick, Benfica's top scorer Jonas headed home to spark delirious celebrations in stoppage time.

Vitoria felt it was a well-deserved triumph and he was bullish about his team's chances in St Petersburg – where Zenit won each of their group games to qualify for the knockout stages.

"We had the match almost always under control and, tactically, we were perfect," he told reporters.

"I think we deserved to score earlier. I am very happy with my players. We won because of our persistence and because of the way we worked.

"1-0 is always a good result in European competitions and I am almost 100 per cent sure that we will score in St Petersburg."

Teenage midfielder Renato kSanches did not share his coach's bombast, stating Benfica were lucky to snatch a tight contest while anticipating a tough ride in Russia two weeks.

"It was a very even game. We played against a very good team, and we were fortunate to score near the end," he said.

"I feel more confident after each game and I want to thank the fans for all the support they have been giving me.

"It will be a different game in Russia, even more with the cold that we will probably get there, which we are not used to."

VILLAS-BOAS: I DON'T WANT TO COACH IN ENGLAND AGAIN

The Portuguese coach will leave Zenit at the end of the season and while his next club is yet to be determined, he has ruled out the prospect of a Premier League return

Andre Villas-Boas has distanced himself from a possible return to the Premier League as he nears the end of his time at Zenit.

The Portuguese coach enjoyed great success at Porto, but his spells at Chelsea and Tottenham were not as prosperous, leading him to take over in the Russian top flight.

Villas-Boas has been in charge of Zenit for almost two years and will leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

And while he is not sure where he will end up next, he insists he has no interest in a return to England.

"I think my time has been done there," he told BT Sport. "It didn't go as well as I had expected, apart from the first year at Tottenham, so I will look forward to trying other leagues.

"I don't know where I'll go, hopefully something good."

The 38-year-old returned to his homeland on Tuesday, with his side facing Benfica in the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, though a late goal from Jonas saw the hosts take the advantage with a 1-0 win.

It was Zenit's first competitive game in 10 weeks following the Russian Premier League's mid-season break, but Villas-Boas does not feel his side suffered as a result of their extended holiday.

"I think there was no special role played by the extended break," he added. "Tactically and physically we feel good and we almost got a goalless draw.

"Yes, Benfica score at the end but the question of who will go further remains open. One goal gives only the most minimal advantage.

"Before the return leg we will play two more matches in the Russian tournament. It will help to gain the necessary rhythm and the Petrovsky Stadium will not be an easy place for our opponents."

RUMOURS: MAN UTD READY TO EMULATE CITY IN TRANSFER RESHUFFLE

After spending huge sums of money with little success in recent years, the Red Devils' owners are keen to adopt a new model with key figures like their rivals' Spanish experts

Manchester United are ready to make sweeping changes to their transfer and staffing policy in an attempt to emulate Manchester City's success, according to The Sun.

The Red Devils have spent upwards of £320 million on transfers since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, but are on course for their worst-ever top-flight finish since 1991.

Now the Glazer family are reportedly having executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward look into restructuring things behind the scenes, with key figures like City's Txiki Begiristain and Ferran Soriano working closely with the team's manager to identify new players.

RUMOURS: GUARDIOLA BANNED FROM SIGNING BAYERN PLAYERS FOR MAN CITY

The Spaniard has verbally agreed he will not try to bring any of the German side's stars to the Premier League with him when he replaces Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad Stadium

Bayern Munich have banned Pep Guardiola from signing any of their players when he joins Manchester City, according to the Daily Star .

The Spaniard will replace Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad Stadium in the summer but has verbally agreed with Bayern that he will not try to bring any of their stars to the Premier League.

Guardiola is a huge admirer of Robert Lewandowski and is reportedly keen to bring in a strike partner for Sergio Aguero, but will have to look elsewhere.

BOATENG EYES APRIL RETURN FOR BAYERN

The Germany international says he is trying to remain patient as he recovers from an adductor injury and is backing his side to beat Juventus in their Champions League last-16 tie

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng is targeting an April return from his groin injury and says he remains hopeful he will feature at the summer's European Championship.

The 27-year-old was ruled out for three months after sustaining an adductor injury in Bayern's 2-1 win over Hamburg in January.

The Germany international has been restricted to 56 minutes of action since the mid-season break for Pep Guardiola's side but is hopeful of playing a part in the season run-in, while proving his fitness ahead of Germany's Euro 2016 campaign.

"My goal is to attempt to get back to training in April," Boateng told the club's official website. "It looks quite good so far but I won't set a date and put myself under pressure."

Boateng featured in all but one of Bayern's matches this season before his injury and concedes his enforced time on the sidelines has been frustrating.

"It's my first big injury. It's difficult, because I can't do what I love," he said.

"First I want to stand on the pitch for Bayern this season. Of course I want to go to the Euro, but the most important thing is to stay patient."

Boateng will hope to see his Bayern team-mates negotiate a Champions League showdown against last season's beaten finalists Juventus – a tie he expects to be keenly contested.

"Juventus are a good team," he added. "We have some injuries, Juve as well.

"We are strong enough to go to the quarter-finals. It will be two difficult games. We have to reach our top level."

"After some problems at the beginning of the season Juventus are in a brilliant form, they play nice football.

"They did last season and they do this time as well. We have to pay attention, but first we have to look at ourselves - even if we know Juve's qualities."

RUMOURS: ARSENAL TO MAKE CARRICK MOVE

The 34-year-old midfielder is out of contract at Manchester United in the summer and reports suggest that Arsene Wenger is ready to sign the England international

Arsenal are ready to move for Michael Carrick should the midfielder leave
Manchester United in the summer, according to the Daily Mirror .

The England international's contract with Louis van Gaal's side expires in June, with the 34-year-old potentially being allowed to leave the club with the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger having often been preferred in central midfield.

And that could see Arsene Wenger look to tempt the former Tottenham man to join the Gunners, with the Daily Mirror reporting that the north Londoners are ready to make a fourth attempt to lure him to the Emirates Stadium.

CAVANI GOAL IS 'MASSIVE' FOR PSG, ADMITS IVANOVIC

The defender concedes the Blues endured a "difficult game" against the Ligue 1 champions but praised his side for the courage they showed after going a goal down

Branislav Ivanovic says Edinson Cavani's winner was a "massive" goal for Paris Saint-Germain as Laurent Blanc's side ran out 2-1 winners in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter on Tuesday.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic put PSG ahead with a deflected free-kick at the Parc des Princes but John Obi Mikel equalised in first-half stoppage time.

However, substitute Cavani grabbed the winner for Laurent Blanc's side 12 minutes time, beating Thibaut Courtois, who made a string of impressive saves earlier in the second half.

Nevertheless, Ivanovic - who played at centre-back as captain John Terry missed out with a hamstring injury - felt the Premier League champions proved their mettle and will fight to book a place in the quarter-finals in the return leg on March 9.

"It was a very difficult game, we tried to play our game and to score the away goal but in the end they scored a massive goal," Ivanovic told BT Sport .

"It was very difficult moment for our team because of a lot of things, but we came here with courage and we tried to score the goal.

"We had a couple of chances before they scored the second goal. We could have won the game and scored a second one.

"We lost a bit of concentration in the end and we were a little bit open, and the strikers like Paris have use every single chance.

"We have to be more careful with this kind of thing because these small details can decide a game.

"We kept fighting, it was difficult and we will try to do everything to win at home to go through."

Gary Cahill was pleased Chelsea had managed to secure an away goal, but was frustrated they could not hold on for a draw.

"Obviously we pushed for the goal tonight. We managed to get it but we're disappointed at the end, 1-1 here would've been a terrific result," he added.

"They're a fantastic team and that was very, very tough. We know how tough it is to come here, you see their record this season – not just in the league but in European competition, it's very tough here.

"It's tough when they have so many corners and final third entries. It's poised now, we know what we have to do."

Cristiano Ronaldo walks out of news conference amid away-form question

Cristiano Ronaldo walked out of a news conference on Tuesday after objecting to a question on his ability to score away from home.

Ronaldo's Real Madrid play at Roma on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.

The Portuguese superstar answered a number of questions from the media -- including why he isn't friends with his teammates -- but he ended it abruptly when he was asked why he hasn't scored a goal away from the Estadio Bernabeu since November.

"Since I've been in Spain, tell me one player who has scored more goals than me away from home," Ronaldo said. "Just tell me one. You don't have one."

He then shrugged and grabbed his jacket. When the reporter continued speaking, Ronaldo ignored him, said "Bye everyone, thank you," and left the room.

This season, Ronaldo has scored 21 goals at home and 11 away. He has only played in four games away from home since his last away goal against Eibar on Nov. 29, compared to eight at home.

"It's understandable that people have doubts," Ronaldo said earlier in the news conference. "It's like with a son when you give him everything and then when you take it away, he cries. I hope I can keep this 'bad form' up until the season's end."

Ronaldo had also appeared annoyed at another question that may have been related to his statistics.

When asked about Lionel Messi's decision during a penalty to pass the ball for Luis Suarez to score on Sunday, Ronaldo replied: "Messi's penalty? I know why he did it, but I don't have more to add."

He may have been alluding to La Liga's scoring charts, where Suarez now leads Ronaldo by two goals, while playing in two fewer games.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Real Madrid squad don't need to be best friends off pitch

Cristiano Ronaldo says it does not matter how well Real Madrid players get on off the pitch -- as long as they are performing together on it.

Much has been made of the camaraderie shown by Barcelona forwards Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, particularly following their penalty combination at the weekend.

In Madrid, conversely, it is often claimed that Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema do not share a similar friendship.

However, at a news conference ahead of Madrid's Champions League round-of-16 first leg with Roma on Wednesday, Ronaldo, 31, said players do not need to be best friends away from football.

"When I was at Manchester United, we won the Champions League and there were some players I would only say 'hi' to, like [Ryan] Giggs, [Paul] Scholes or [Rio] Ferdinand," Ronaldo said. "But the harmony on the pitch was great.

"It's not necessary to go out eating with Bale, what matters is when you are on the field. What happens off it doesn't count, it matters that we are a team on it."

With that in mind, the Portugal captain is confident about his side's chances against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

"I'm feeling good and the team are good," he said. "We're working well, playing well and scoring lots of goals. Of course this is not the Primera Division, it's the Champions League, but we've got a great desire to win. These are the most difficult games on paper, but we're looking to win it.

"Whether it's Champions League, domestic league or cup, it's the same for me -- I always want to win. Tomorrow will be a great game against a great side, who are playing at home in front of their own fans, but we'll be looking to win."

Ronaldo is the record goal scorer in the Champions League, but there is one scoring record in European football's elite club competition that does not belong to him.

That -- the record for the oldest goal scorer -- instead belongs to Francesco Totti, a player he cited as a role model.

"Impressionante [impressive]!" Ronaldo said in Italian when asked what he thought of Roma's 39-year-old talisman. "Fantastic! This shows that age is not important in football. It's great that he keeps playing, it's an example to everybody that there are no limits."

Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane was equally lavish with his praise of Totti, who he hopes will continue to play for as long as possible.

"It's up to Totti [if he retires at the end of the season]," said Zidane, who played against Totti in the final game of his career -- the 2006 World Cup final.

"What he's done up to now has been spectacular. You've got to take your hat off to him. We'll see if he continues, but for those of us who love football, it is always a pleasure to see him on the field."

Zidane is preparing for his first Champions League game as coach and it is a prospect that excites him.

"It's special for the club, it's special for me and it's particularly special for the players," Zidane said. "The most important thing for us is being prepared, and I think we are prepared. We're physically well.

"We feel the necessary pressure to play a Champions League game. We're focused and this is the most important thing for me. The tension is right for a Champions League game."

Thiago Silva would prefer PSG to sign Neymar than Cristiano Ronaldo

Thiago Silva has said he would prefer Neymar, rather than Cristiano Ronaldo, to join Paris Saint-Germain and had already tried to convince the Barcelona star to move to France.

Brazil forward Neymar, 24, and Real Madrid attacker Ronaldo, 31, are both thought to be on PSG's list of targets for the summer window.

Asked who would be the better signing, PSG captain Silva told Le Parisien: "It's a difficult choice -- can we take both? Seriously, they are two world-class players."

But he said he would prefer to see Neymar in Paris, adding: "Yes, because I'm Brazilian. I'm like his big brother.

"We spoke a bit during the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Zurich [in January]. I said to him: 'Come, come to play in Paris with me.' He laughed a bit, but he didn't react.

"He said: 'We'll see, we'll continue as we are, and at the end of the season you'll know what I'm going to do.'

"Neymar is 24 and is already at the top. I think that next year or the year after he will be the best player in the world if [Lionel] Messi gives up his place."

PSG have reportedly been weighing up an offer for Neymar, Ronaldo or Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Ibrahimovic, who has hit 27 goals this season, has been tipped to leave Paris in the summer when his four-year contract comes to an end.

Asked about the situation, Silva said: "I don't know what's going on in Ibra's head or that of the president.

"But with everything that he's done this year, Ibra has made the decision of the president easier.

"To have a player like him is vital. I know that the president is intelligent and will extend his contract -- if Ibra wants to renew it."

LIGUE 1 IS TOO SMALL FOR HAZARD – HIDDINK ON PSG LINKS

The Belgium international has been linked with a move to Parc des Princes, but his boss feels a return to the French top flight would be a step backwards for his career

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink believes Ligue 1 is not competitive enough for the likes of Eden Hazard, who has been linked with a move to
Paris Saint-Germain.

The Belgian, who joined the Blues from French side Lille, recently claimed that it would be difficult to turn down an offer from PSG.

But while the French champions are gaining momentum in their quest to become a major threat in Europe, Hiddink believes the greatest players in the world should always strive to play in the most competitive leagues.

"[PSG] have big targets to win the Champions League," Hiddink said at a press conference.

"Step by step, they have gathered a reputation that they are very serious about becoming of the biggest teams in Europe, so this challenge I can understand.

"But it is a different league. They are now ahead, I think, by 24 points. It is not a bad league, but this team is on top of that.

"For me, I think big, big, big players always like to be in the biggest league which is the Premier League and La Liga, and also the Bundesliga.”

PLATINI: I WANT UEFA PRESIDENCY BACK BEFORE EURO 2016

The former France international was pleased with his hearing with Fifa's Appeal Committee and hopes to be back at the helm of European football's governing body before Euro 2016

Banned Uefa president Michel Platini left his Fifa Appeal Committee hearing "quite happy" and hopes to clear his name before Euro 2016.

Platini and his Fifa counterpart Sepp Blatter were both banned for eight years in December following an investigation by Fifa's Independent Ethics Committee into a payment of two million Swiss francs (£1.3m) made by world football's governing body, and authorised by Blatter, to the former France captain in February 2011.

The Investigatory Chamber of the Ethics Committee is seeking to increase the punishment, meaning Blatter and Platini - who both deny any wrongdoing - could be handed with life bans from football.

Platini began his appeal against the ban in Zurich on Monday and was pleased with how the hearing had gone.

"It has been a really good hearing, it has been very well conducted by people who have been sincere and I'm quite happy about how it went," he said.

"Now, their interpretation - we'll see how it will go, I don't know what they are going to do, but I'm quite happy with how it went
"I'm fighting for the presidency, I'm fighting to be left in peace, to be, not exonerated, because I don't like to say this word, but I'm fighting to go against the injustice of the people who took my job away."

The 60-year-old hopes victory in his appeal could see him back at the helm of European football ahead of Euro 2016 in his home nation.

"I hope to go back to work as soon as possible," he added. "I hope to go back to the office as soon as the decision has been given by the appeal commission and then, well, prepare for Euro 2016.

"There are things to do that are important; it's been several months that I've not been working.

"I always tried to be reasonable regarding the decisions, regarding especially Uefa, so I'm waiting to go back, to work on Euro 2016, this beautiful European football party which will take place in a country called France."

I AM SURE MAN UTD ARE LOOKING AT MOURINHO - DAVID LUIZ

The PSG centre-back expects his former Chelsea boss to be back in management soon, with his links to the Blues unlikely to prevent him from moving to Old Trafford

David Luiz is sure Manchester United are looking at Jose Mourinho, and does not think his former coach would have any problems replacing Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho has been heavily linked with the Old Trafford club as Van Gaal comes under increasing pressure, and has suggested he will be back in management soon.

And the former Chelsea centre-back, who was sold to the Blues' Champions League last 16 opponents while Mourinho was in charge at Stamford Bridge, would not be surprised if the Portuguese joins United in the near future.

“Coaches come, coaches go, it’s part of football,” Luiz told reporters. “Jose won't be out of work for long, he never is.

"You can’t dispute the success he has had - that is why I am sure Manchester United are looking at him.

“I don’t think Jose would have any problem taking the Manchester United job. Yes, he will always care for Chelsea, but Jose does what is best for Jose.”

'IT'S OBVIOUS TERRY DESERVES NEW DEAL, CHELSEA MUST SHOW HIM RESPECT' - DAVID LUIZ

The former Blues defender is perplexed by the club's unwillingness to offer the 35-year-old a new contract, insisting their "greatest ever player" deserves more respect

David Luiz has demanded Chelsea show John Terry respect, insisting that it is "obvious to everybody" that the defender deserves a new contract.

Blues icon and captain Terry is expected to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season after he revealed his contract will not be extended beyond this season, though he still has hope of prolonging his stay.

While the Premier League club have not ruled out the idea of Terry staying for at least another year, David Luiz insists they are doing their legendary centre-back an injustice by not going all out to keep him.

"John is probably Chelsea’s greatest ever player, the club need to show him some more respect," he told reporters,

"He has been clear that he wants to stay at the club, and they are making him wait for an answer.

"That is not how you treat a player who has given you so much and been a big part of so much success. The fans love John - if this is not handled well, they are not going to be happy.

"I am confused why John hasn’t been offered a new contract. He is still the best central defender at the club and one of the best in England, there should be no question about him being offered another a year.

"I really don’t know what to say, the whole situation has confused me. I think it’s obvious to everybody he deserves an extension."

The Brazilian takes on his former team on Tuesday with Paris Saint-Germain as they meet in the last-16 of the Champions League.

While PSG are in remarkable form and running away with Ligue 1, Guus Hiddink's side are massively underperforming in the Premier League, but the defender insists they cannot take their opponents for granted at the Parc des Princes.

"We have always said Chelsea’s form in the league means nothing in these two games," he added. "They are very capable in Europe, and they will be motivated for these two games.

"It is important to get a good first result in Paris. I know how Chelsea play, they won't come and just attack at us.

"They will be patient, let us attack, and then try and hurt us on the break. They have the players capable of doing this, so we must be careful."

LUIZ ADRIANO NOT INTENT ON LEAVING AC MILAN, SAYS AGENT

The 28-year-old came close to a move to Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning in January but his representative says he is not currently looking for another club

Luiz Adriano's agent is not aware of any new offers for the AC Milan forward, but insists the player is happy in Italy.

The Brazilian was close to joining Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning in the last transfer window, but the deal collapsed at the last minute after he reportedly pulled the plug.

Reports have suggested other Chinese clubs are still interested in acquiring Luiz Adriano's services, but agent Gilmar Veloz says it is down to Milan to decide on the 28-year-old's future.

"I'm not aware of any new offers from China for Luiz Adriano," Veloz told
Calciomercato . "These are questions that should be put to the Rossoneri.

"We had the offer from Jiangsu, but you know how that ended, and I can't speak about another offer.

"We don't intend to find another club. Luiz Adriano is tied to Milan on a long contract and he's happy.

"Any negations would be totally down to Milan, but I repeat: I know nothing."

The Chinese Super League transfer window closes on February 26, but only three clubs have a spot left on their roster for a foreign player following a spate of high-profile overseas signings.
