CAF CONFEDERATION CUP WRAP: AKWA UNITED IN IMPRESSIVE AWAY WIN, NASARAWA UNITED STRUGGLE TO CONTROVERSIAL WIN

Goal takes a look at the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round, first leg games decided over the weekend all over the continent

Nigerian Federation Cup champions Akwa United made a good start to their CAF Confederation Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Vita Club de Mokanda at the 13,500 capacity Stade Municipal de Pointe-Noire on Saturday afternoon.

The 2016 Nigeria Professional Football League Super Four champions, playing in the Confederation Cup for the first time, had no problems against their Congolese opponents as they secured a 1-0 first-leg victory in the preliminary round.

Former Kano Pillars winger Ubong Ekpai sealed the win, with Akwa United now firm favourites to progress when they host Vita at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo for the second leg.

A late penalty kick from Seun Sogbeso helped Nasarawa United to a 2-1 victory over AS Generation Foot at the Abuja National Stadium on Sunday.

Tayo Fabiyi scored early in the game for the Solid Miners with a superb finish, but the home side could not hold on to the slim lead, as Ibrahima Niane's effort beat Danlami Umar in goal for Nasarawa United.

But Sogbeso kept his cool to convert a late spot kick to give his side a slim advantage ahead of the second leg fixture in the next 14 days.

There was no surprise in Congo as Saint Eloi Lupopo beat Bandari SC 2-0. Christian Mugalo opened the scoring in the 36th minute before Heritier Makambo wrapped up the win four minutes from time.

Kawbab de Marrakech produced the result of the weekend with a 3-0 victory over US Forces Armees.

Three sides hold slight advantages after their first legs. South Africa's Ajax Cape Town, Africa Sport and Rennaissance all recorded slim results.

SC Gagnoa produced an impressive first half display to beat USFAS Bamako 2-0 with goals coming from Kassi Malan and Coulibaly Tiekoura.

The only tie to not see a goal was Deportivo Mogomo's clash with USM Louma while Gaborone United and JKU FC were both handed places in the next round after their opponents withdrew.
