Despite missing majority of their players at the end of last season, the Pride of Rivers have started a rebuilding process which has yielded a pre-season win against the Umuahia...
Dolphins head coach, Stanley Eguma has praised his young players after the team beat Abia Warriors 1-0 in a pre-season friendly match in Omoku near Rivers State on Sunday.
Chigozie Ihunda scored the lone goal in the first half.
Looking beyond the scoreline, Eguma told Goal that he is happy his team is taking shape after the mass exodus of players which befell Dolphins at the end of last season.
Dolphins’ top stars like Victor Ezuruike, Ifeanyi Egwin, Emeka Atuloma, Jonathan Zikiye among others have left Port Harcourt in search of new opportunities elsewhere after several broken promises regarding payment of outstanding debts.
Eguma informed Goal that the exit of the aforementioned players left him in the lurch at the start of the pre-season build up but that after some time with the new players, he is very hopeful that Dolphins will come good by the time the season starts on Sunday.
The former U23 coach hinted Goal that they have written to about two clubs in the premier league for friendly matches and are hoping to play at least one before their first league match of the season at home to Enyimba.
“The win over Abia Warriors was very crucial for us but I can’t say that we attached too much importance to it. We are eager to do well in the league this coming season after the many players that left us at the end of the season. We will make good impression and I am so elated at the way the new players are shaping up before our match with Enyimba,” Eguma told Goal.
“We have written to two premier league clubs and we are very optimistic that one of them will heed our call for a friendly match. We want to be in top shape before the game with Enyimba."
Dolphins barely managed to survive relegation purge from the premier league at the end of last season and were eliminated from the 2015 Caf Confederation Cup in the first round after they got to Tunisia for a date with Club Africain late.
