Arsenal Great Nwankwo Kanu Snubs Nigeria and Cote D'Ivoire, Backs Morocco to Win AFCON 2025

In a surprising move, Nigerian football legend and Arsenal great Nwankwo Kanu has tipped Morocco as the clear favorite to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to Soccernet. Kanu's prediction comes as a snub to his home country Nigeria and reigning champions Côte d'Ivoire.

Kanu, a two-time African Footballer of the Year, cited Morocco's talented squad and home advantage as key factors in their potential success. "Morocco has always boasted great players playing in Europe," Kanu said in an interview with Le Site Info. "But this generation is unparalleled. Yassine Bounou, Achraf Hakimi… The technicality and talent of the entire squad give this team the status of a clear favorite for the upcoming AFCON."

Morocco's recent performances on the world stage, including their historic semifinal finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, have impressed Kanu. Despite their early exit from the 2023 AFCON, Kanu believes the Atlas Lions will rebound on home soil.

Kanu's experience playing against Morocco in AFCON tournaments informs his assessment. "I played against Morocco in the AFCON tournaments of 2000 and 2004… They always enter the competition as favorites but often fail to fulfill the dreams of millions of Moroccans," he recalled. "By hosting the AFCON at home, Morocco has every chance to be crowned champion."

Kanu's prediction will undoubtedly add fuel to Nigeria's ambitions as they look to secure their spot at the tournament with upcoming clashes against Libya. Côte d'Ivoire, meanwhile, will seek to defend their title despite Kanu's snub.
