Despite securing the services of Swedish-Danish goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal for £20.7 million, Chelsea's interest in Maignan suggests uncertainty about their current goalkeeping options.
Jorgensen, 22, signed a seven-year contract with the Blues but has yet to make his Premier League debut, featuring only in the Carabao Cup and Conference League qualifiers. Meanwhile, Robert Sanchez has been preferred by head coach Enzo Maresca in the top flight.
Maignan, however, remained loyal to AC Milan, with his representatives currently negotiating a new deal. The French goalkeeper's happiness at the San Siro and substantial price tag ultimately deterred Chelsea and Bayern Munich from pursuing a transfer.
The revelation comes amidst concerns raised by Manchester United legend Paul Scholes about Chelsea's goalkeeping situation. "I'm a little bit worried about the keeper," Scholes stated on The Overlap.
Chelsea's recent form, with three consecutive clean sheets in all competitions, may have temporarily alleviated pressure, but Scholes' comments highlight the importance of a reliable goalkeeper.
Maignan's impressive performances for AC Milan have solidified his position as one of Europe's top goalkeepers. Chelsea's interest in him underscores their desire to strengthen their squad with top-class talent.
