Kane Breaks Five Champions League Records

Harry Kane Poses With The Match Ball and The Player Of The Match Award.

Harry Kane enjoyed a prolific night for Bayern Munich by scoring four goals in the 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

Vincent Kompany’s side opened their 2024-25 campaign with a flourish in front of their fans to set numerous records for the club and Harry Kane.

The former Tottenham striker scored four goals, while Michael Olise scored a brace, Raphael Guerrero, Leon Goretzka, and Leroy Sane added the other goals.

It was a record-breaking night for Harry Kane, who continued his impressive goalscoring record for the Bundesliga giants.

The 31-year-old is now the highest-scoring English player in the UEFA Champions League with 33 goals in 45 matches, overtaking Wayne Rooney, who scored 30 goals.

He is the first English player to score four goals in a Champions League game, and also the first English player to score a hat-trick or more for a non-English team in the Champions League.

Kane scored his 50th, 51st, 52nd and 53rd Bayern Munich goals – in his 50th appearance for the club.

He recorded his 24th career hat-trick, the fifth time he has scored back-to-back hat-tricks.

Kane was delighted to break Wayne Rooney’s Champions League record.

He said: “To help the team in any way possible is important. Whether they’re penalties or normal finishes, I’ll take them all. It was a great night for us.

“I keep all the balls after hat-tricks. The lads might be sick of signing them, but keep them coming.

“My son Louis, he loves playing football right now. He’s only three, but I’ll take it [the match ball] home and put it next to his bed, and he’ll be happy when he wakes up in the morning.

“Whenever you’re in a conversation with Wayne Rooney it means you’re doing something well. He’s one of the greatest English players and one of the best players that was in the game. It’s a nice achievement.”

It was also a night of records for Bayern Munich in the competition as they became the first team to score nine goals in the Champions League.

The result was also the joint second-highest-scoring Champions League game ever, level with Monaco’s 8-3 win over Deportivo La Coruna in 2003. The record remains Borussia Dortmund’s 8-4 win over Legia Warsaw in 2016.
